A new week, a fresh shelf. This edition brings together a verified UK chart, one US digital-book signal, a BookTok highlight and a small celebration of paper.

The UK shelf

The Bookseller’s current top five, checked on 9 October alongside its 6 October report, puts Threshing Day first, followed by Gruffalo Granny, Swan Song, We Chase Shadows and The Steps. The source is NielsenIQ BookScan, via The Bookseller.

Beyond the UK

Threshing Day also leads the US Apple Books paid-books list reported on 6 October by Associated Press. That describes one digital platform, rather than all American book sales. We Chase Shadows and Swan Song also have US editions from Penguin Random House.

The reader conversation

The Family Friend was the UK BookTok chart leader for July, according to The Bookseller’s 21 August report. It is an earlier monthly highlight, not a claim about this week’s most discussed book.

For Empyrean readers, Kelly West’s 2 October CinemaBlend review praises the pleasure of returning to familiar characters in Threshing Day. Her qualification is useful too: this is companion material, not the next full-length instalment. That is one reviewer’s view, not a reader consensus.

Three dates to circle

Gold Dust by Lacey Turner and Doctor Who: Tales of the TARDIS are scheduled for 22 October. Paul Theroux’s True North follows on 29 October. These are publisher-confirmed UK dates checked for this edition.

Until next week: make a little room for something you have not read before.
